- [ Animate @ 07:04 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

source: Digialspy.
Harry Potter producer David Heyman has revealed that he is "optimistic" that the film's three main stars, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, will return for the fifth film in the series.

At the DVD launch of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Heyman said, "The kids are on for the fourth. We now will start discussing the fifth, it's the same on each film.

"You're in the middle of the third you discuss the fourth, you're in the middle of the second, you discuss the third.

"I hope they stay with us and they'll stay with us as long as they want to. There may come a point some day where they decide not to and if they do, they'll go with all of our blessings.

"But I hope they stay and they're wonderful, and I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll have them again for five."

Gary Oldman NOT Starring In Star Wars

- [ Jasen @ 10:47 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

As previously reported earlier this year, Gary Oldman was rumored to have signed up to provide the voice of a villain in next year's "Star Wars" prequel. However, Oldman's manager's website has posted this update:

Gary Oldman's voice will NOT be heard in the upcoming STAR WARS film. Gary was offered, and agreed to perform in the film, in fact he was excited and looking forward to the work. The snag that made it impossible however is that this film is being made as a non-SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) film. George Lucas and gang agreed to hire Gary Oldman if he in fact would become a union buster, and perform work illegally overseas. As a resident of America, and also a member of SAG, out of respect and solidarity with the other members, he could not and would not consider violating his union's rules.

So there you have it -- Gary Oldman is officially out of Star Wars.

 Good Guys Finish Last

- [ Jasen @ 10:34 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

From SouthFlorida.com:

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling is shocked to discover that young female fans lust after the scoundrels in her books.

Rowling finds it unsettling that teenage girls are more attracted to actor Tom Felton, who plays villain Draco Malfoy, than they are to Daniel Radcliffe, who stars as the eponymous boy wizard.

She says, "It is very depressing. I make this hero -- Harry obviously -- and there he is on the screen, the perfect Harry, because Dan is very much how I imagine Harry.

"But who does every girl under the age of 15 fall in love with? Tom! I don't understand it."

Terrorist Scare for Harry Potter Set

- [ M17 @ 08:29 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

China Daily reports that security has been stepped up on the set of the new Harry Potter movie after the studio where it is being shot received a chilling terror threat.

Leavesden Studio near London answered the menacing phone call last Friday, which warned of a brutal attack on the film's young stars.

And insiders fear Al-Qaeda - the terrorist network responsible for the September 11 attacks - are behind the threat.

A studio source says, "The caller apparently said, 'It's payback time... this is for all you've done to our women and kids.'

"The film is being made by American company WARNER BROS so it sounds like it could have an Iraq or Al-Qaeda connection."

Police and dog handlers have been drafted in to patrol the perimeter fence and the number of security guards has been trebled.

A police spokesman says, "We are responding with extra vigilance."

Matthew Lewis Supports Local Blood Drive

Actor Matthew Lewis is supporting a local blood drive. Click below for more.

Source: Leeds Today via WizardNews

In his fantasy life, teenage actor Matthew Lewis is the sort who might actually faint at the sight of blood. For he plays the hapless teenage wizard Neville Longbottom, the one who gets his spells mixed up, in the Harry Potter film series. But in real life Matthew, of Horsforth, Leeds, is made of stronger stuff and went along to The Headrow blood donor clinic to celebrate its first anniversary.

Matthew, 15, a pupil at St Mary's High School, Menston, said: "When I was little, my mum Lynda took me with her when she gave blood. So I know how important it is and I've always planned to do it as soon as I'm old enough."

 Before she was Prof McGonagall

- [ Bunny @ 02:57 AM . GMT . Movie: General ]

More than three decades before she donned a wizard's robe to play Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, Maggie Smith won a well-deserved Best Actress Oscar for portraying another inspirational British teacher. And although Jean Brodie remains a far more complex and controversial figure than the firm but gentle McGonagall, Smith brings her patented eccentricity to both women, making them unique and memorable.

Robbie Coltrane Talks About Life Off Screen

- [ Jasen @ 11:16 AM . GMT . Movie: General ]

Sunday Herald had a sit-down interview with Coltrane, who discusses Harry Potter among other things:

No doubt the public attention engendered by playing Hagrid will influence his decision whether to continue with the Harry Potter franchise. He is contracted to make four, and is currently filming the fourth, The Goblet of Fire. He has been able to fit this interview in because production has been halted while the computer graphics wonks work their magic. Each film takes about nine months to make; it is, he says, more like a pregnancy than a production.

While on set, Coltrane makes use of a fabulous Forties ‘Silver Streak’ trailer which he has restored. He sits in it between scenes, chatting with co-stars Robert Hardy and Michael Gambon. The conversation is highly technical. Hardy is an authority on medieval longbows, and hand crafts them himself. Gambon, meanwhile, is an enthusiastic restorer of antique rifles. Coltrane talks cars. I like to think of the three of them, droning on like three Walter Matthaus, while, in a modern trailer nearby, Daniel Radcliffe develops PlayStation thumb.

I ask whether he will sign on for the final three films. “I don’t know. I really don’t know what the circumstances will be for the last three. I don’t know if I should be saying this, although if anyone has got any brains they’ll have worked it out, but if Jo Rowling hasn’t finished books six and seven within the next two years, the kids we’ve got at the moment will be too old to play the parts. And they may not even want to. So it depends on the variables. In some ways I would rather get on with something else, but I don’t want to say that because it sounds so f**king ungrateful.”

He pauses, and cocks his head like an owl listening for a mouse in a cornfield. He has heard a motorbike zoom past outside and is enjoying the sound of the engine.

“So, no, I don’t know if I’m going to do any more,” he continues. “They will, of course, to enchant me back, offer me frightening amounts of money.”

“And is that hard to resist?” I ask.

“Of course it is. I’ve got two young kids. I don’t know what the future holds.”

Much more's at the link (Note: beware of some adult language in this article)!

 You-Know-Who was Who?

- [ M17 @ 09:22 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

A British actor claims he was hired to play Harry Potter’s arch-enemy Lord Voldemort in the big-screen adventures of JK Rowling’s hero but has been pushed out of the films by the celebrity demands of Hollywood. Richard Bremmer, a veteran theatre, television and film actor, told the Sunday Herald that during shooting in 2001 of Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone, he learned he would not be seen on screen nor credited as the villain.

His sequences were cut and he was credited only as the voice of “He Who Must Not Be Named” – one of the phrases that fearful wizards use to refer to Voldemort at the beginning of the first Harry Potter book.

Much more can be found at the Sunday Herald.

 TIME For Kids Interviews Radcliffe

- [ Jasen @ 12:50 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

On July 1, the mag spoke to Daniel Radcliffe about playing Harry in the films. Here's an excerpt:

TFK: What’s it like to see yourself on screen?
Daniel: It’s really weird. It’s very surreal, because I’m, like, 30 feet high.

TFK: How many times did you see the first two movies?
Daniel: We have a ritual each year. The first time I see this third film, it will just be me, David Heyman, my mom and my dad. Then I’ll have a screening for all of my family and friends. And then I’ll go to the premieres. There are two premieres. So I see each film about four times. It gets very tiring after a while.

John Cleese Prefers Bond Over Harry

- [ Jasen @ 01:07 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

From IOL:

John Cleese prefers his role as Q in the James Bond franchise to his work as Nearly Headless Nick in the Harry Potter movies - as he enjoys having a greater input in the script.

The 64-year-old actor prefers working on movies like The World is Not Enough to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as he is given free rein to add more humour to the dialogue.

Cleese explains: "Bond is brilliant as you are allowed to have a say in the script, but with Harry Potter everything is in the hands of the special-effects team.

"No one knows what's going on except them - not even the director because he doesn't know if the take works."

 Movie Revenues: PoA vs. CoS

- [ M17 @ 12:19 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has this interest bit comparing movie revenues of Chamber of Secrets versus Prisoner of Azkaban...

Revenues for the third "Harry Potter" fell a steep 63 percent from the movie's $93.7 million opening weekend gross. In contrast, "Shrek 2" grosses fell just 33 percent in its second weekend. In 2002, revenues for "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" fell 52 percent in its second weekend, though that movie opened in November. "Prisoner of Azkaban" was the first "Harry Potter" movie to open in summer, when competition is stronger.

As more classes let out for summer, distributor Warner Bros. is counting on steady weekday business from youngsters to help sustain "Harry Potter," said Dan Fellman, the studio's head of distribution. "We're in good shape, even though we took a pretty good drop this weekend," Fellman said. The movie's 10-day total still is almost $10 million ahead of "Chamber of Secrets," which took in $148.4 million in that length of time.

 Daniel Radcliffe, Pure Music Lover

- [ Jasen @ 05:35 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

When he's not filming the latest Hogwarts blockbuster, Daniel indulges his true passion - playing his bass to the anthems of 1970s' counter-culture.

Inside the rusting hangar of Leavesden Studios, where the world of JK Rowling's epic series is brought vividly to life, Radcliffe races from the Great Hall or the Gryffindor dormitory back to his dressing room to practice his latest favourite riff.

And those who've heard him reckon the world's most famous child star could conjure up an alternative career when he's older.

"I got him a guitar before I left, you know," recalls Chris Columbus, director of the first two Potter films. "I got him an electric Telecaster guitar but he traded it in for a bass. He felt bass was more interesting.

And then about two months later I went to his house for dinner and he was playing the bass really, really well."

In an exclusive interview ahead of the release of the third instalment of the Hogwarts saga, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Radcliffe speaks for the first time about his growing passion for music.

"I love it. I mean I love acting, the world of film is absolutely brilliant, but there is so much music to explore. I'm getting into new bands every week," he says.

"I'm a bit all over the place with my tastes.

At first it was all Sex Pistols and'70s stuff but there are some great bands now - especially in Britain - that I like."

Daniel nominates The Libertines as "the best rock band in the country right now" but adds he's also fond of Jane's Addiction, Rage Against the Machine, Jet, Audioslave and Franz Ferdinand.

Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron claims the credit for modernising Daniel's CD collection.

"When I met Daniel, he used to be into punk rock and I started to tease him that he was like an old fart listening to this 30-year-old music. Then he got his revenge because now he starts quoting all these groups that I don't know to make me feel old. "But I gave him some music. I said, 'Now you like the'70s, but you have to know the'80s. And out of the'80s he likes Talking Heads."

Another Version of The Sorcerer's Stone

- [ Jasen @ 02:37 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

The New York Times has this:

NEW YORK -- On Friday night, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" sold out theaters all over the globe. But in a makeshift screening room in a Brooklyn warehouse, more than 75 filmgoers paid $7 each to watch the first film in the series, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Sort of.

On the screen, "The Sorcerer's Stone" played as it was released by Warner Bros. But the original soundtrack, dialogue and all, was turned down and replaced by an alternate version created by a 27-year-old comic-book artist from Austin, Texas, named Brad Neely. He calls his soundtrack "Wizard People, Dear Reader," and it is one more breach of the media industry's control of its products.

Q: Harry is a little awkward, dare I say a bit dorky. Do you see any of yourself in him?

RADCLIFFE: Absolutely. I've never been one of the cool people at school, but then again, I don't get the people who are cool. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that they don't interest me.

Emma Watson is often asked how much she has in common with her on-screen counterpart, Hermione Granger. The 14-year-old actress insists she is not a "book worm" like Granger (Watson prefers art and sports), nor does she possess Granger’s serious demeanor. Yet, the as the 'Harry Potter' series progresses, Granger and Watson are growing and blossoming into strangely similar strong, sophisticated young women.

 Hairy Woes For Coltrane

- [ Jasen @ 02:25 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

Hmm...that headline needs a little work.

From WebIndia123:

Robbie Coltrane detests the hours of make-up he has to go through to turn himself into hairy Rubeus Hagrid, the giant Hogwarts caretaker in new movie Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban.

"It's revolting having your face covered in glue. It's a horrible, horrible thing and the only downside of these wonderful films for me," The Sun quoted him as saying.

"It also means that kids never recognise me. They just know Hagrid - and I am buried under tons of make-up, beard and costume," the Harry Potter star added. (ANI)

 Watson Gets Punk'd!

- [ Jasen @ 06:50 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

Okay, not really. Pranked's more of the word.

From Teen Hollywood:

A cheeky British kids TV host played a practical joke on Harry Potter star Emma Watson at the UK premiere of the latest movie, after asking her recreate one of her fight scenes from the film.

Ministry of Mayhem host Stephen Mulhern asked the 14-year old actress to reenact the moment in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when she punches Harry's enemy Draco Malfoy, at Monday's bash in Leicester Square, London.

But Mulhern sneakily stashed fake blood capsules in his mouth, so when Emma whacked him, he started to bleed.

The horrified actress apologized profusely, until she caught on to the scam.

 Tom, Not so single?

- [ Deb @ 03:01 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

Is Tom Felton protesting too much? All right, I admit I'm contributing more to rumor as opposed to actual reporting here. Still I have to wonder at Tom Felton's assertions that he's completely without female companionship. Thanks Sara for the scoop!

Check out the recent interview with The Sun, where he manages to sound all woebegone about it.
At the London premieres of POA and Scooby Doo 2 he is seen with the same statuesque beauty. The photographer at the POA event specifies that she is his date.

Another possible hint is that on his official web site's FAQ page, he lists his favorite coloring for girls as "olive skin, brown hair." This gal certainly matches the description.

Strangely, his site also seems a bit flirtatious regarding Emma Watson, even while denying a relationship. Perhaps this is another red herring, as I suspect the Sun article is.

I would certainly like to know the particulars about this mystery girl!

 Interview with Robbie Coltrane

- [ Vickie @ 02:50 AM . GMT . Movie: General ]

Cinema Confidential have an interview with Robbie Coltrane who plays Hagrid in the movies.

Q: Robbie, how is it doing this film the 3rd time around?

ROBBIE: Well, it's very similar in the nicest possible. It's like going back for Thanksgiving. You say, "Hi, how are you doing? What have you been doing? Blah, blah." So, it's all very nice.

Q: And how was having Alfonso [Cuaron] as a new director?

ROBBIE: A nightmare (Laughs). Talentless. No sense of humor. I don't know how he got the job. He must have slept with somebody. (Laughs). No, I adore him. I think he's a wonderfully talented man. He's exactly the way I expected him to be having seen his films. He's crazy, and rock and roll, and adolescent, but phenomenally focused about what he wants to do.

Q: Having worked with two difference directors on the Harry Potter films, what's the key thing you've noticed that's different?

ROBBIE: Well, it's kind of hard to say. I don't want to diss anyone and say that anybody is better than anybody else. Every film is a year in the life of the children. This film had to be dark and rock and roll and immediate and getting that feel of immediate through a A big budget film, if you're not careful, is a huge cumbersome beast you know. With 1500 people and the crew, it's very hard to keep that level of agility and vitality going, but I thought he did it wonderfully. He kept the camera going moving all the time. I'm sure you noticed that, which the CGI people surely hate. Every move of the camera goes into a computer, and when they start using the CGI, all those moves are used as points of view. It's mind-blowing complicated stuff and real state of the art.

 Rockstar Dan Radcliffe?

- [ Scott @ 09:32 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

Teen Hollywood has this article on another potential actor-turned-rockstar:

'Harry Potter' star Daniel Radcliffe wants to start his own rock band.

The teenage actor, who plays the young wizard, is currently learning to play the bass guitar, but would also like to be the lead singer.

Daniel, who is a fan of the Sex Pistols, The Strokes and The Libertines, revealed: "I'd like to be in a band. I know that's probably sounds really weird, but I'd really like to do it. I'd like to sing, but I play a bit of bass as well. My voice is ok."

 Watson's Paychecks Stay In Gringotts

- [ Jasen @ 11:36 AM . GMT . Movie: General ]

From Contact Music:

The parents of the 14-year-old British star, who plays HERMIONE GRANGER in the Potter film, have locked the actress' movie money away to make sure she doesn't waste it.

Watson says, "All of my money is locked away in a bank until I'm 25 and I'm never going to see it until then!

"I have good friends and family who keep my feet on the ground and keep it real."

 A Day in the Life...

- [ Scott @ 05:43 AM . GMT . Movie: General ]

The New York Daily News has an article about what's going on in Emma's life right now, including what she looks for in guys.

Calling all boys with a funny side who think Emma Watson is cute.

That's Hermione to you, Harry Potter fans, and she plays a much more central role in "The Prisoner of Azkaban" than in the first two films.

While Watson has often professed an unwavering devotion to Brad Pitt (okay, and to Justin Timberlake sometimes), what she looks for in a real live boy, she says, "is someone who can make me laugh."

At 14 and very pretty indeed, as they would say back in England, she could probably have her pick. Even though she goes to an all-girls school.

We have grown up, haven't we?

But Watson's energies are mostly directed elsewhere right now, what with school - history has just segued from the American Revolution to the French - field hockey, tennis, dance classes and shopping for the kind of transatlantically trendy flounced miniskirt she's wearing today.

Already prepping for this summer's filming of "HP4," she's learned her Hollywood lessons well. At the New York premiere last week - held in the afternoon, for her fan base - she also took care how she dressed.

"I wanted something that wasn't too sexy, but fun and nice," she says.

She found a remarkably sweet-looking strapless number by Lanvin. Still, fashion designers aren't throwing clothes at her in return for publicity as they do with grown stars - "not yet."

She's happy to act her own age, actually. "Luckily, we [Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint] are growing up perfectly with our characters," she says.

Alfonso Cuaron, the director of the new Harry Potter film, has shown Watson - with his brooding, psychological take on "Prisoner of Azkaban" - that adolescence can be just as fascinating as magic.

"He made me see Hermione much more in depth because he made a much more personal film," she says. "He gave us a lot of freedom, really trusted us, and encouraged us to experiment. It's a more raw, real film."

Like Hermione, who transforms her anger into "this great girl power," Watson says, "I'm a teenager - I feel angst, I've got hormones, I get mad sometimes."

Though many may find their inner children even more terrified by "Prisoner of Azkaban" than the first two Potter installments, "I think young children will find it less scary," she says. "It doesn't have as many of those things that suddenly make you jump - like, 'Oooh, spiders, disgusting!'"

Watson worries that Americans "think I'm a terrible snob," because of her upper-crust English accent. "I'm not," she says.

Competitive, yes.

"You should see me play table tennis," during the long waits between takes on set. "I'm very, very competitive." She even knows the cause. "My parents, definitely."

They are divorced lawyers. Her chaperone today is her mother's beau, Jonathan, who's "an enterpreneur," Watson says proudly. He is involved in digital radio on several continents.

His role does not include scouting for boys who can make her laugh. He doesn't have to.

"Daniel and Rupert make me laugh, tremendously," Watson says. "They're just so funny, especially when they're together. They make me absolutely howl with laughter."

 Pottermania = Beatlemania?

- [ Scott @ 08:18 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

The Boston Herald tackles this very question in an article in Sunday's edition:

Could the ``Harry Potter'' series spark a 21st century version of Beatlemania?

From the squeals, screams and sighs that greeted Daniel Radcliffe's red carpet appearance a week ago at the U.S. premiere, the mop-haired 14-year-old who plays Harry Potter is the hottest thing out of the British Isles since Princes William and Harry.

It's been 4 years since he was cast as the boyish English wizard with glasses and a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, and Radcliffe's Potter has transformed from cute kid to teen idol.

On Friday, his third Potter outing, ``Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,'' arrives in theaters nationwide as Harry enters his third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

As the world's gaze focuses on Harry's encounter with the escaped prisoner (played by British chameleon Gary Oldman of ``Bram Stoker's Dracula'') and the dangers of the fearsome dark-robed spirits called Dementors, Radcliffe will be busy all summer filming the fourth film, ``Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,'' due in November 2005. But can he be Harry forever? Or at least until the end of the series?

Scottish author J. K. Rowling promises there will be seven novels. Radcliffe, who earned a measly $125,000 for the first ``Potter'' (the same as his cohorts Emma Watson and Rupert Grint), is signed on a film-by-film basis, as are all the juvenile players.

Whether he remains Potter for the duration depends on the combination of how much he grows, the box office and Warner Bros.

``I don't think there's any point in lying. It would be hard to see anyone else film the part,'' Radcliffe said.

``We are getting older. There was a longer gap between the third and the fourth. I'm now 14 and kind of go to 15 in a couple of months, so I'm getting older than Harry. We can only take it one film at a time. If they do want me to do it after five, we'll have to see then, I suppose.''

In Hollywood fashion, fate seemed to cast him for the role of a lifetime. The son of a British ICM literary agent, Radcliffe had acted occasionally, most notably playing young David Copperfield on the BBC. But unlike everyone else his age, he'd been taken out of the ``Harry Potter'' pool because his parents feared the notoriety would destroy his life.

Will Harry Die In Book 7?

- [ Jasen @ 06:27 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

Dan Radcliffe seems to think so (from Teen Hollywood:

The 14-year-old actor, who plays Harry, reckons his character will die in the seventh novel - which is yet to be written - because he is so closely linked with his evil nemesis, Lord Voldemort.

He explained: "I've always had the suspicion that Harry might die. He and Voldemort have the same core. I think the only way Voldemort can die is if Harry dies as well."

And another interesting tidbit:

It was recently revealed that Daniel could face the axe from the star role because he is ageing faster than his character.

But the actor admitted he doesn't want anyone else to take over the role.

He said: "It will be difficult to see someone else play the part. But it's a possibility."

 Robbie Coltrane, The Loveable Hagrid

- [ Jasen @ 06:25 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

As usual, Coltrane's Hagrid is in the middle of it all, like a jovial version of a backwoods oaf. Only Coltrane could pull it off, and only Coltrane would slough off the accompanying acclaim he gets for his likable portrayal. "The kids don't usually know me when I'm on the street," he admits, shrugging. "The grownups do, from other things, so I give them Brownie points for recognizing me."

 Filming to Return to Scotland

- [ M17 @ 06:23 PM . GMT . Movie: General ]

The sundaymail has this...

THE team behind the new Harry Potter film yesterday revealed they will return to Scotland.

The crew on third film, Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, spent 28 wet days in the Highlands.

Glencoe is the backdrop for scenes outside Hogwarts school and a crucial sequence in which Harry and pals try to rescue a creature known as a Hippogriff.

Producer Mark Radcliffe said: 'Helicopters dropped gravel every day to stop the set sliding down the hill.'

But the film-makers said it was worth the trouble.
