Just a little news-worthy tidbit, the Official Site has up a new welcome screen image that features Hagrid, Snape, and Dumbledore in very serious poses, but pleasantly dark and moody nonetheless!

Daniel Radcliffe - Britain's Second Richest Teen!

- [ M17 @ 02:58 PM . PST . Movie ]

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has become Britain's second-richest teenager after Prince Harry.

Daniel, 14, has reportedly earned £6m in three years from playing the fictional children's character, Harry Potter.

The second-richest teenager in Britain spot was previously held by Charlotte Church, but with five of the seven Harry Potter movies yet to be released, Daniel's current earning are just a small amount of his potential income.

Daniel Radcliffe originally received £75,000 for his performance in Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, which was released in 2001.

A film insider explained: "Daniel gets a cut for every Harry Potter product sold that bears his picture.

"The project would lose too much credibility if they changed any of the lead actors now so Daniel can name his price."

Predicting that Daniel will overtake Prince Harry's £14m fortune by the time all the Potter movies have been released, the movie insider went on: "Daniel has already reached scary heights but his earnings to date are only the tip of the iceberg...

 Godric's Hollow Interviews Cast

- [ Scott @ 07:30 AM . PST . Movie ]

Thanks to Bobafett of Godric's Hollow for informing us of their exclusive interview with Jim Tavare, who will play Tom the Bartender in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (in theatres everywhere June 4th):

BoBaFeTT - We have yet to see the movie so we haven't seen you as tom yet, did it take much preparation in the makeup department to get ready for your role?

Jim - Alfonso was very passionate how he saw Tom. He had obviously put A lot of thought into the character. He wanted a strong physical presence so a hump was born, rotten teeth, grotesque fingernails and one leg longer than the other. He wanted the costumes to look more modernist in Azkaban.

For the entire interview click here. To see who else they interviewed, click below.

Godric's Hollow also was able to interview James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley), Devon Murray (Seamus Finnigan), and Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom) at the Celebrity Autograph Expo this past weekend.

What's your favorite scene in GoF that you hope they include in the movie?

Devon: Quidditch World Cup
Matthew: The one where Harry gets the egg from under the dragon, yeah.
James: Where the Weasley's go and rescue Harry in the beginning.
Oliver: Probably the Weasley tent. (At the quidditch World Cup all the Weasley's, Harry, and Hermione squeeze into 2 pup tents but they're huge on the inside).

John Cleese On His Upcoming Films

- [ Jasen @ 12:14 PM . PST . Movie ]

John Cleese talked to About.com about some of his upcoming movies, including "Shrek 2" and "Around the World in 80 Days", with a mention of HP:

And Harry Potter 3? No, I’m not in that. At least I’ve heard a strong rumor that I’m not. The Harry Potter people haven’t actually told me. I think they were a bit embarrassed and so didn’t actually ring me, which is fairly typical.

Are you committed to future Potters? Yeah, I think I’m going to be in the fourth. You see, the point is Nearly Headless Nick has nothing to do with the plot. As you know movie scripts are very unforgiving things. Anything that’s not on story finishes up on the cutting room floor, so it’s best to cut it first.

Ohh, it'll be a miss to not see him in PoA :(

Chris Rankin Drops By The Scholastic Store

- [ Jasen @ 06:24 PM . PST . Movie ]

The latest from Scholastic.com:

Chris sports a new, shaggier hairstyle

Chris Rankin stopped by Scholastic's world headquarters in New York City recently to talk about his role as Percy Weasley in the Harry Potter movies. I was lucky enough to meet him and interview him for Scholastic News Online. Chris Rankin is a very kind and funny person. As we were on our way to a tour of the Scholastic store, I offered to let him walk down the stairs in front of me. He insisted that I go first. He is funny because when we were visiting the Scholastic store, he clinked the suit of armor and said, "Oh, it's metal!" I guess he thought it was going to be made of plastic or cardboard.

One of the questions I asked Chris was: Did you read the Harry Potter books before you applied for the movie? "Yeah. That's the only reason I applied to do it in the first place," he told me. He was a fan of the books to start with.

I asked Chris what he and Percy have in common.

"Not that much actually," he said. "I'm an only child, so I don't have six other brothers and sisters [like Percy does], thank goodness. However, I was a prefect at school and I've got ginger hair, and at the time the film came out I was the age Percy was in the first book." Chris also hopes he is not quite as boring as Percy.

Scholastic Student Reporter Lindsay Guastafeste interviews Chris Rankin at Scholastic's world headquarters. (Photo: Rachel Laskow)

The fourth Harry Potter movie begins filming in April. It will be released in 2005. While Chris will be busy with that, he has also just started his own theatre company in England.

I asked Chris if he would like to work on the stage in the United States.

"Yes! Are you offering me a job?" he said. (I told you he was funny.) He would love to work on Broadway, he said. Chris is a big fan of musicals and musical theatre.

So what if Harry Potter was written into a play?

"A play? That would be interesting. But how would you do Quidditch matches on stage?" he said. "It could get messy." He also thought that a Harry Potter musical would be fun.

Fiona Shaw, Kenneth Branagh Talk About Ireland

- [ Jasen @ 06:15 PM . PST . Movie ]

From The Courier Press:

Irish actress Fiona Shaw, Aunt Petunia in the Harry Potter films, hails from County Cork. She thinks the Irish are such great storytellers because "They're great liars. I've had a fair amount of stories told to me when you're expecting to be paid or a contract to be done or a promise to be kept. 'Oh, yes, well the thing was the dog ran off with it.' It has something to do with the fact that if you take everything away from people, it'll heighten what they have got, and the Irish were not allowed wealth and weren't allowed opportunity or language, to speak their own language. And they weren't allowed religion. But, of course, nobody could stop them talking."

Kenneth Branagh, Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, was born in Belfast. He says, "There's an ultimate certainty about not taking yourself too seriously which is not to say that one can't employ seriousness of purpose about all sorts of things, but there are just times when it's (better to laugh)... The Vikings came in, then Cromwell came in and walked all over us. The British tried to mangle our culture like they did many other cultures globally. Somehow the Irish had a sort of lyricism about it - 'Oh, don't worry about it, let's go have a drink or sing a song...' You feel it in the people. They are great survivors."

Maggie Smith and the Theater Life

- [ Jasen @ 07:22 PM . PST . Movie ]

The Weekend Australian had a brief talk with the actress:

MAGGIE Smith, queen of actors, who has conquered the most exacting roles in the theatre, is palely loitering on a sofa in a Sydney waterfront hotel, marvelling at the view, somewhat wan from unaccustomed jet lag and looking forward to experiencing stagefright yet again.

On her first visit to Australia, Smith is in town to begin a much anticipated national tour of her BAFTA award-winning role in Alan Bennett's play Talking Heads, a double bill with fellow venerable Brit Margaret Tyzack.

...The 70-year-old actor says even after her many years on stage and screen she is "a jangle of nerves" before she steps on stage.

"It never gets any better," she laughed. "At least, I haven't found it so, I have to confess. I think it gets worse - worse and worse. When you start, you know, you have some sort of blind confidence, arrogance, really. The more you do it the more difficult you realise it is."

Gary Oldman To Star In "Batman Begins"!

- [ Jasen @ 07:12 PM . PST . Movie ]

Yep, Sirius is making the rounds. From the official Warner Bros. press release:

Batman Begins," director Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated film, has commenced production in Iceland, with Gary Oldman joining the all-star cast. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In "Batman Begins," Oldman will play Lieutenant James Gordon, a detective on the Gotham police force. - [ Nick @ 05:38 PM . PST . Movie ]

From The New York Times:

Harry Potter has inspired children to visit the barrier between platforms 9 and 10 at Kings Cross Station in London looking for the Hogwarts' Express since 1997, when the first of J. K. Rowling's books was published. A number of tour companies have organized itineraries that include, if not the actual Diagon Alley or Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, then some of the sites, later enhanced by special effects, that were those imaginary settings on the big screen.

- [ Jasen @ 11:39 PM . PST . Movie ]

The Mr. Ollivander actor...Thanks to Leaky for pointing us to this from BBC:

John Hurt plays the irrepressible Tory minister in this new six-part drama.

Controversial, irreverent, charming and vain, Alan Clark was one of our most colourful politicians during the 1980s and 90s. Adapted from his best-selling diaries, Clark lays bare personal and political landmarks of the time with unique wit and candour, from his first lowly ministerial appointment in 1983, through the glorious rises and the ignominious falls, scandals and affairs.

James and Oliver Phelp's 18th Birthday Project

- [ Jasen @ 01:38 PM . PST . Movie ]

Jess of the Weasley twins actors fansite Double Trouble writes:

Dear IHarryPotter.net Staff,

As we all know, the transition from a teenager to an adult can be considered one of the most monumental changes in one’s life. This important transition, otherwise known as the 18th birthday, is coming up soon for James and Oliver Phelps (Fred and George Weasley), and their fans would like to put together a fanbook in honor of the occasion. We would really appreciate it if you could spread the word by means of a simple news announcement or a link!

All fans of Harry Potter are welcome to contribute by sending in anything from a birthday card/present and a fanfic involving them to a newspaper clipping of James and Oliver/Harry Potter and a picture of the James Ave street sign in their hometown. The theme of the fanbook is music (Bon Jovi, RHCP, the Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Eagles, Queen, etc. to name some of their favorite artists) and sports (golf and pro-golfers like Sergio Garcia and Nick Faldo, as well as England rugby and the Aston Villa or Blues soccer teams) so sending in something related to the aforementioned bands/athletes would be perfect. Everything must be received by January 31st so we don’t have much time, but hopefully, with your help, we can spread the word quickly enough to reach everyone that would be interested. Please visit the fanbook page to find out more about the project!

Thank you so much for your help!

 The HP Movie Crew...

- [ M17 @ 11:09 AM . PST . Movie ]

What we see is great actors... but what about those who work behind the scenes...

"It can be tough to get your foot in the door, but I got to know some faces in the industry and phoned around before I landed my first job on Chamber Of Secrets. It's good money, but hard work. The hours aren't very sociable and sometimes you're under a lot of pressure. "There's always another challenge. I worked on Hogwarts girls' bathroom as well as Diagon Alley. You meet some interesting characters and you get to go to the wrap parties at the end of filming."

Cinemas Need Magic as Box Office Earnings Fall

- [ M17 @ 10:55 AM . PST . Movie ]

A SHAKE of a magic wand from a certain bespectacled boy wizard could have worked wonders for British cinemas in 2003.
Industry figures published yesterday show the absence of a new Harry Potter film may have contributed to a sudden downturn in the number of people going to the movies over the past 12 months.

 Emma Thompson Goes On "Hardtalk"

- [ Jasen @ 03:58 PM . PST . Movie ]

Reader Andrew informs us that the BBC television program, "Hard Talk" talked with Thompson today, where she discussed her AIDS charity work:

Talking to Lyse Doucet about her campaign for action on HIV/Aids, she told HARDtalk, "this is the biggest global emergency that we've probably ever faced - the biggest plague since the Mediaeval plague. I think our response to it has been pitiful. It's time for us all to become active because we're looking at the death of a continent".

See video of the interview here.

Double Feature Fizzles at NY Theater

- [ M17 @ 11:54 AM . PST . Movie ]

The Riviera Theatre in Tonawandan, New York, scheduled a showing of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as a double feature this past weekend but to their dismay only eight people showed up for what was expected to be a sold-out show, leaving the usually busy theatre quiet.

Theatre manager Jim Kretz attributes the low turnout to other area events and a lack of advertising for the special show.

"There's a lot of stuff going on today. I think a lot of people are out shopping or at the Bills game. The Lord of the Rings may have had something to do with it as well."

The theatre will hold the screening over until next weekend with hopes that more people will show up for the second run, Kretz said.

- [ Jasen @ 02:14 PM . PST . Movie ]

Philip Key of Daily Post sits down with Jason Issacs for an interview:

Alas, he is not in the next Harry Potter film - his character was not in the story. But Malfoy is in the next book and he's keeping his fingers crossed that the character will be in that film.

"You know, it's a bit of a scream to go into the make-up room and see the cream of the British acting world sitting there. Personally, I'd just be happy just making the tea for people like Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman and Gary Oldman."

 OotP Movie Director Rumor Debunked

- [ Jasen @ 01:48 PM . PST . Movie ]

Chris Faile of FilmJerk.com lets us know that Stuart Baird is not, in fact, directing the future OotP movie:

For all it has done to transform the modern landscape, the Internet can sometimes still resemble the children’s game of “Telephone.” Take the recent case of rumors circulating that director Stuart Baird would helm the fifth installment of the “Harry Potter” franchise, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." So how did this happen and what is the reaction from Warner Bros., the distributor of the film?

The rumor began circulating when Baird’s name was suddenly found on the "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" page at the Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com), with Baird's name there since at least December 14. Since that time, a half-dozen news articles – along with speculation found on many a film message board – have appeared.

 Mayor Nearly Headless Nick?

- [ Jasen @ 10:00 PM . PST . Movie ]

According to the Houston Chronicle, John Cleese is pondering the possibility:

John Cleese might follow in the footsteps of Arnold Schwarzenegger by making a run for California public office, reports The New York Post.

Cleese's Monty Python co-star Michael Palin told London's Daily Telegraph that Cleese is "very involved with his local community" in Santa Barbara and is thinking of running for mayor.

As for his acting career, Palin said, "He doesn't really want to do comedy anymore. He has a very active and inquiring mind." Cleese's appearances in the Harry Potter movies will "fund the rest of his life," said Palin.

Hmm... Mayor John Cleese...it could work.

Dan, Rupert, and Emma...Thirty Years From Now

- [ Jasen @ 09:56 PM . PST . Movie ]

Javier of Fans de Harry Potter graciously translated a short article from Portuguese, a scan of which, you can check out here, courtesy of HarryPotterOFilme.

December's SET magazine edition brings an interesting article for Harry Potter fans: who would be the actors that would act as the characters from the series as if they were like 30 years old!

Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe): Joseph Fiennes
Although he starred on movies such as Shakespeare In Love, Ralph Fiennes' brother still hasn't starred in real movies with big roles. Who knows if he wouldn't surprise us acting as a grown-up Harry Potter...

Hermione Granger (Emma Watson): Rachel Weisz
The role she played in The Mummy was very inteligent, as Hermione is. Rachel's beauty and sensuality would show how a young 'nerd' girl turn into a beautiful woman.

Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint): Jason Flemyng
His humor and strong English accent are essential for acting as Ron Weasley, and is very similar physically.

Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton): Owen Wilson
Owen Wilson usually personifies characters in funny movies and doesn't need to exaggerate very much to act as Malfoy, Harry's arrogant enemy.

Sean Biggerstaff Talks Harry Potter and Stardom

- [ Jasen @ 10:32 PM . PST . Movie ]

MuggleNet has up the full text of a new interview that the French magazine, ONE, had with Sean Biggerstaff (Oliver Wood), complete with a page scan.

However, Sean had this to say on his official site, regarding the interview:

I just had a look at the interview from Mugglenet. Diane put it up as there is nothing in anyway incriminating in it, but it is still the case that it deviates hugely from anything I ever said. This is pretty typical, although this one was particularly notable in that respect as I didn't even know what the word 'ephemeral' meant until I looked it up after reading the article.

I have no problem with articles being displayed on this site but everyone should bear in mind that most journalists never print an accurate account of what was said in an interview. Read them. If you enjoy them, great. If you don't, doesn't matter. Just don't place any value in them. Same goes for most of what I write, come to think of it.

 New Interview with Alan Rickman

- [ iruhkoi @ 04:50 PM . PST . Movie ]

Thanks to iHP reader Mandy for pointing out a new interview with Alan Rickman (also known as Professor Snape in the Potter movies) from studentnewpaper.org. While it's primarily focused on the new British hit film "Love, Actually," Rickman does reference his role in the Harry Potter movies as well:

"In many of Alan Rickman’s more illustrious roles we’ve seen him an inimitable ‘baddie’ of the silver screen. The hysterically camp Sheriff of Nottingham who ‘called off Christmas’ in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the infinitely refined terrorist Hans Gruber in Die Hard and, of course, the pseudo-psychotic Professor Snape in Harry Potter. As it happens, Rickman often admits a desire to escape his quintessential bad guy image."

John Williams Talks About His Music and Influences

- [ Jasen @ 11:18 AM . PST . Movie ]

The Harry Potter music composer recently sat down with CSO.org's (The Chicago Symphony Orchestra) Phillip Huscher, in which he discusses his work on composing film scores:

Phillip Huscher:
It's hard to imagine films such as Star Wars or Schindler's List or Harry Potter without your music. Where do your musical ideas come from? How do you begin?

John Williams:
My choice always is not to read scripts. I'd rather go into a projection room and look at a film that is at least in an editorial state where one can get a pretty accurate rhythm of the piece and have a sense of surprise at the events. If you know what's happening, you don't have that same pristine, unprepared reaction that the audience will have.

Alan Rickman Talks Being Professor Snape

- [ Jasen @ 12:59 PM . PST . Movie ]

Handbag.com has a great interview with Alan Rickman who discusses his career as an actor and his playing Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films:

Have you noticed a big difference in your career since you've done Snape in the Harry Potter films?
Harry Potter feels like a whole other part of my life. It's somehow not part of the me who did Private Lives in the West End and the me who directed, and who did Love Actually. Harry Potter is like a pocket of life that I go and visit again from time to time.

Have you read all the Harry Potter books? Are you a fan?
You can't stop turning the pages, can you? But I haven't read them all - I have to try to catch up as we film.

The part of Snape seemed so perfect for you... there was something about it which made it look like you were stretched and yet sort of confined at the same time. Did you feel that?
Good way of putting it, actually. Because that's what Snape's like. There are such still waters in there. And the trouble is that there's so much we don't know yet 'cause JK Rowling hasn't revealed it. I know a couple of things about all that, that you don't and I'm not telling...

How do you get the dreadful Snape hair?
Easy. It's a wig.

There's more at the link above and kudos to Mandy!

 Tom Riddle as... Superman?

- [ Mischa @ 08:29 PM . PST . Movie ]

Here's what Dark Horizons had to say on casting rumors for the caped crusader (that other one who doesn't play quidditch but still can fly):

Onto the more speculative internet gossip and whilst Brendan Fraser seems still the fave for Supes, that apparently hasn't stopped Warners from continuing to test with other actors. One such rumoured name is 25-year-old Christian Coulson, better known as the evil Tom Riddle in "Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets".

Keep in mind people that this stemmed from the UK film magazine HotDog and is right now, just a rumor.

Parent Company of Warner Bros. Drops "AOL" Prefix

- [ iruhkoi @ 08:54 PM . PST . Movie ]

This is slightly old, but still pertinent:

The parent company of Warner Bros. studios, which distributes the Harry Potter films, has elected to change its name from "AOL Time Warner" to simply "Time Warner." The move comes after investors and corporate officials felt that the AOL and Time Warner merger that resulted in the name change wasn't as successful as had been hoped.

"We believe that our new name better reflects the portfolio of our valuable businesses and ends any confusion between our corporate name and the America Online brand name for our investors, partners and the public," AOL Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons said in a press statement.

As a result, Potter fans will now see the words "A Time Warner Company" underneath the WB logo at the start of the Prisoner of Azkaban film, which is different from what was seen in the previous two.

"Filmed Together" Sequels Becoming A Trend

- [ iruhkoi @ 06:32 PM . PST . Movie ]

An article from Gazette.com takes a look at how more and more movies coming out of Hollywood are being filmed together with their sequels. Notable examples include the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Matrix trilogy. The article also makes a Harry Potter reference:

"On the one hand, filming one or more sequels at once assures audiences that they will see their favorite characters exactly as they remember them from the previous movie. There is nothing worse than actors who age faster than their characters.

The "Harry Potter" kids are aging rapidly and filmmakers are trying to churn out sequels as quickly as possible, but they must wait for J.K. Rowling to write her books first. In the long run, this could spell casting changes in future "Harry Potter" movies."

 It's "Love, Actually" Week!

- [ Jasen @ 06:30 PM . PST . Movie ]

Reader Mrs. Lupin writes:

Hi Jason,

I went to a sneak preview of "Love, Actually" last night. In a dialogue with the U.S. President, England's Prime Minister -- played by Hugh Grant -- lists things that prove "Britain is great." Harry Potter and Shakespeare are included in this list.

I thought that was interesting since "Love, Actually" stars HP actors Alan Rickman (Snape) and Emma Thompson (Trelawney). The movie is terrific, but it's too mature for young children.

 Harry Potter Autograph Collection

- [ Michelle @ 07:55 PM . PST . Movie ]

TLC pointed us in the direction of an absolutely wonderful autograph collection. Not only does it have nearly all of the actors and actresses involved in the HP movies but several others that may interest you as well, including the stars of LOTR and Star Wars. Included with the collection are some letters from the actors. One of the more revealing ones is from Nina Young who plays the Grey Lady. She provides some very interesting insight to the story of the mysterious Ravenclaw ghost.

Dear Wendy,
Thank you for your letter. I hope we will learn more about the Grey Lady in the next book. JK Rowling wrote to me before the first movie and said she would appear later in the series. She also told me that she was a highly intellectual young lady and a bit of a blue stocking. She never found true love as she never found a man up to her standards. Although I was supposed to be in all the movies, I did not film the second and am still waiting on the third. My fingers are crossed.

I work for a theater circuit and handle of the trailer requests from the studios – that’s how I know this (and I’ve been bugging my WB rep for weeks). I don’t mind my first name being used, but I’d rather not use my company’s name. Thanks!

Radcliffe's Father Clarifies Fan Mail Address

DanRadcliffe.co.uk has obtained a letter from the father of Daniel Radcliffe, in which he addresses the huge amount of fan mail his son receives and provides more insight into how you yourself can send Daniel a letter.

"Daniel values each and every letter he receives from his fans, loves to hear from them and it is his intention that each letters receives a reply. Unfortunately, many letters arrive without the senders address or the writing is illegible and it is therefore impossible to reply. Sorry!

The only two addresses which should be used for Dan's fanmail are: ARG Talent, 4 Great Portland Street, London W1W 8PA or LEAVESDEN STUDIOS, PO Box 3000, Leavesden, Herts, WD25 7LT."

 Radcliffe Talks Potter Future...

- [ M17 @ 05:30 PM . PST . Movie ]

It's mostly the same stuff, though...

Daniel Radcliffe, who again plays the title role in the upcoming third Harry Potter movie, told the official Potter Web site that he'll play the boy wizard at least one more time. "At the moment I am working on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and I will certainly make Goblet of Fire," Radcliffe told the site. "After that? Who knows?" (Source: Sci Fi Wire)

Radcliffe also compared Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron with Chris Columbus, who helmed the previous two Potter films. "First of all, I consider myself very lucky to have worked with two great directors on these films," he said. "Chris is without doubt the most energetic director I have ever met. He was amazing in keeping us motivated and in encouraging us every step of the way. Alfonso, on the other hand, directs in a more intense way. The scenes in this film are some of the most passionate and emotional I have ever worked on, and Alfonso's style has been very helpful to me." Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is currently in production, eyeing a 2004 release.

Jasen here. I was watching the "Timeline" movie trailer earlier today when I thought I recognized one of the actors shown.  Emma Thompson on Trelawny

- [ Scott @ 06:22 AM . PST . Movie ]

From Ireland Online:

Emma Thompson says she will be wearing “great, googly-eyed glases and Oxfam clothes” for her role in the new Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The British actress will play Sybill Trelawny, the eccentric professor of divination at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the film, which is currently shooting at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire.

“I was hoping that at some point I’d be asked to do something in a Harry Potter film,” Thompson told journalists in London. “I’m doing it for my three-year-old daughter so that later she will be impressed.”

She joins a cast of new faces that includes Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, Julie Christie as Madam Rosmerta, Dawn French as “The Fat Lady” and Michael Gambon taking over from Richard Harris as Professor Dumbledore.

Thompson, who took a two-year break from work after her daughter was born, will soon be seen in Richard Curtis’s romantic comedy Love, Actually, playing the Prime Minister’s sister, who discovers her husband is having an affair.

Next year she will begin filming Nanny McPhee, a children’s story which she has been writing for six years.

 Thewlis: 'No Muggles!'

- [ Scott @ 01:05 PM . PST . Movie ]

Thanks to Chaz for the link from CBBC:

Actor David Thewlis, who plays Professor Lupin in the upcoming third Harry Potter film, has banned Muggles from his house.
The British star has put up a sign in his garden which says "No Muggles Allowed" on the front and "Quidditch Played Here" on the back.

The actor said: "Now kids come by and think I really am Professor Lupin".

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban stars loads of British actors, and should be out in June 2004.

Big Star

 Harry Potter at Collectormania 4

- [ Scott @ 02:13 PM . PST . Movie ]

Thanks to Syndrys for sending me this encounter with the Phelps twins at Collectormania 4!

Having just got back from Collectormania, I have to say it was one of the most incredibly weekends of my life!

I arrived on Friday afternoon. I met up with some of my friends, and we headed straight for the hotel; after a night out on the town, we were ready for bed, looking forward to a good time at Collectormania the following day.

We arrived at the centre at around 8:30am. We headed straight for the Phelps twins and Christian Coulson. I got a ticket for Christian, and then went to queue for the Phelps twins. I was wearing a Bon Jovi t-shirt I got a couple of years back at a concert I went to in Glasgow (Scotland), because I knew that the twins are huge Bon Jovi fans! When I got to see them, I said hello, and told them how to spell my name (Kristina). Oliver signed first, adding the 'To Kristina, Best Wishes,' followed by James signing it. While James was signing, Oliver chatted to me about Bon Jovi. It went a little like this:

Oliver: "I love your shirt!"
Me: "Thanks!"
Oliver: "Did you go to see them?"
Me: "Yeah, a couple of years ago in Glasgow."
Oliver: "Cool, we saw them in Northampton - they were amazing!"
Me: "Definitely, I thoroughly enjoyed the gig I went to!"

Then my friend asked if I wanted to get my photo with them. I nodded, and she took the photo; James on my right, and Oliver on my left! Unfortunately, I havent had my film developed yet, so the photos arent online!

After that, I went to queue for Christian. I got the autograph quite quickly, and he signed it "To Kristina, Best (evil) Wishes." He thanked me for seeing him, I said he was quite welcome, and then I went in search of caffine. As I approached Starbucks, I noticed a card shop. Nipping in quickly, me and my friends picked out a birthday card, and a mini cake, bought them, and while we were having coffee, wrote out the card to Christian. After we finished our coffee, we headed back up to where Christian was signing, and gave him the card and cake. He smiled brightly when he saw what we had for him, and thanked us. I got another photo with him, and another photo of him just on his own.

It had been my plan to meet Toby Jones and Matthew Lewis on the Sunday. Unfortunately, due to massive queues whenever I went to see either or them, I never got my chance. I also had to leave early because of a screening I was due to go to that evening (Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers), and I needed to get good seats!

Other than the Harry Potter stars, I also got to see Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan, Sean Astin, Sala Baker, Lawrence Makoare, Brent McIntyre, and Doug Bradley. I had wanted to see some of the Star Trek people too, but my budget (of which, I somehow managed to spend £20 more than I actually had on me - no idea how that happened) was severely stretched - I lived off cheap crisps and shared pizza all weekend...!

Pictures will follow when I get them developed and scanned.

We look forward to your pictures :)

"Mr. Harris, sir, you forgot your Rolls Royce!"

- [ Jasen @ 08:44 PM . PST . Movie ]

Hello Magazine reports:

Many absent-minded motorists have had the embarrassing experience of forgetting where they parked their car, but most manage to find it again before too long. The late Richard Harris forgot his Rolls-Royce completely, however, and left it sitting in a garage for 25 years.

His amazing oversight came to light after his widow was hit with a £329,000 parking bill. Apparently the legendary actor received the car as part of his payment for the film The Heroes Of Telemark in 1965. He parked the luxury automobile in a New York car park and subsequently forgot it existed.

The Rolls spent the next few decades racking up £250 a week in tariffs, which his widow has been asked to pay. In order to meet the costs, Elizabeth has decided to auction the vehicle at Christie's, where it is expected to fetch £143,000. "It's heartbreaking to have to let it go," she said. "But as his sole trustee I have to get his affairs in order."

Thanks to Tom!

Alfonso Cuaron Wants Lots of Heather Detail For PoA

- [ Jasen @ 08:41 PM . PST . Movie ]

Sunday Mail reports:

MOVIE bosses filming the latest Harry Potter blockbuster have been plundering truckloads of heather.

They have been slammed by conservation groups after ordering huge quantities for the English stage set of Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban.

It comes after author JK Rowling told her Canadian publishers to print her books on recycled paper to protect forests in Canada, Finland and south-east Asia.

In a move that would horrify everyone at Hogwarts, wild purple heather growing in Glencoe, Aviemore and Newtonmore is being ripped out, baled and driven 500 miles to Leavesden Studio inHertfordshire. One source said: ``They don't really know what to look for or how to cut it. Let's just say local Harry Potter enthusiasts are helping out.''

Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron renowned for his attention to detail insisted on authentic Highland heather.

But Scottish heather has declined by a quarter since 1945 due to forestry, grazing and climate change. SimonThorp, of the Heather Trust, said: ``Heather is important for the landscape and without it red grouse would die out.''

Michael Gambon Talks About Being Dumbledore

- [ Jasen @ 06:12 PM . PST . Movie ]

The actor recently spoke to Newsround:

The actor who plays Professor Dumbledore in the third Harry Potter film, Sir Michael Gambon, has revealed that his new fans won't leave him alone.

Sir Michael said all the attention has changed his life a fair bit, especially since lots of kids have worked out where he lives.

He says he gets letters from children all over the world, and sometimes they even knock on his front door, although he doesn't mind really.

Sir Michael - who took over the role after Richard Harris died - said it was sometimes a bit of a nuisance but it's important to keep smiling and be nice to his young fans.

He said: "My friends' children come round and see me now, which they never did before.

"Being Dumbledore is a big responsibility."

But playing Dumbledore obviously hasn't proven that big a job, because since filming began in February he's had time to make three other films!

The Return of the Hogwarts Express!

- [ Jasen @ 02:34 PM . PST . Movie ]

IT has taken more than a wave of a magic wand to repair the damage...
But the Hogwarts Express returns to Scarborough on Saturday, for its first public engagement since the official Harry Potter train was attacked by vandals in the resort.

An estimated £3,000 damage was caused to two 64ft carriages, which were sprayed with graffiti while in sidings near Seamer Road, Scarborough.

The Hogwarts Livery and maroon paintwork was completely covered by a silver cityscape and signed "Slobs" in the attack.

But the West Coast Railway Company said yesterday that repairs had been completed and a visit by the train to Scarborough, planned more than two months before the vandalism, would still go ahead.

Hogwarts Express Guard John Dooley said yesterday: "The carriages have been repainted and will be part of the train. We have had a tremendous response from the public, who thought what happened was dreadful.

- [ Jasen @ 11:42 AM . PST . Movie ]

" 'Peter Pan' is a great romantic adventure and love story between two kids on the edge of growing up,' says Jason Isaacs, who plays the dual roles of Capt. Hook and Mr. Darling.

"It's not about middle-age men on cell phones. And it doesn't have a menopausal woman slapping on green tights and inviting everyone to sing along.'

Now that we have that straightened out, we'll let Isaacs -- who has cornered the market on childhood terror between his role as Lucius Malfoy in "Potter' and now Hook in "Pan' -- explain what Barrie was onto 100 years ago.

Rupert Grint (. you just wait), Devon Murray (Seamus Finnegan), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), Alfie Enoch (Dean Thomas), Joshua Herdman (Gregory Goyle), Jamie Waylett (Vincent Crabbe), Emma Watson, Tom Felton and Robbie Coltrane.  Hogwarts Express Causes More Fires

- [ iruhkoi @ 09:02 AM . PST . Movie ]

from This Is York:

The famous Harry Potter Hogwart's Express train left a trail of fire behind it as it steamed along the York to Scarborough line.

But it wasn't mischievous young wizards practising their spells. Instead, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said a faulty cinder box had meant red hot cinders were spilling out on to the bone dry trackside. Several of the smouldering cinders ignited railway sleepers, causing two small fires at Strensall, two at Norton, two at Rillington, near Malton, and a further three at nearby Scagglethorpe.

The article reports that there were no passengers aboard, and thankfully, no injuries. Earlier this year in February, the Hogwarts Express was responsible for setting fire to nearly 100 acres of land (link thanks to HPANA).

"Chill Cheater" Suits Help Keep Potter Cast Warm

- [ iruhkoi @ 08:39 AM . PST . Movie, Movie: PoA ]

from the North Devon Gazette & Advertiser:

Feats of magic and daring would be much harder for Harry Potter if he were wet and cold, but luckily for him an innovative North Devon company has the answer. Movie stars from Johnny Depp to Nicole Kidman have come to appreciate the insulating qualities of thermal suits crafted by Reed Chill Cheater of Braunton.

Even wizards like to keep warm and the company has just completed a large order for the cast of the next Harry Potter film, entitled “The Prisoner of Azkaban.”

“Of course you won’t see our suits, as they will all be under capes and other wizardly gear. Four suits were made for Harry Potter himself — together there was 10 dry suits and 18 full sets of thermals,” said owner Chris Reed.

In 2001, Curtis starred opposite Pierce Brosnan in the spy drama The Tailor of Panama. Her son was played by a young British child named Daniel Radcliffe.

"One day I was looking at Daniel, who was standing beside the swimming pool. I turned to his mother and said: 'He could be Harry Potter.'

"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" has been kicked out of the Top Ten Grossing films of all time (In the US) by "Finding Nemo." Granted, no, this isn't official, yet, but it either happened yesterday or will happen today according to estimations by various sources. In fact, as I'm writing this "Nemo" has probably already passed "Harry." When the official figures come out on Monday it will be official, so I'm just breaking it to you before it happens. Hopefully "Azkaban" will give "Nemo" a run for its money. Literally...

I was with all these people wearing medieval garments; and of course in no time a thousand little boys under ten came up. It’s amazing how they spot me … but it’s not a bad thing...

Dave McKean Production Designer on PoA

- [ Scott @ 08:29 PM . PST . Movie ]

Lynnith of CountingDown sent me this article on her trip to Comic Con 2003:

The far more exciting news came from a most unexpected source - Sunday's conversation with Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean (of Sandman and now MirrorMask fame!). An audience member asked the pair what they thought of Harry Potter, and Dave McKean revealed that he'd been hired as a production designer for both the 2nd and 3rd films!!

For Chamber of Secrets, he helped design the spiders, and on Prisoner of Azkaban, he worked on the design of the Dementors and Hippogriffs.

If you're unfamiliar with Dave McKean's work, take a look at our MirrorMask countdown, or browse through any Neil Gaiman graphic novel. Trust me - this is FANTASTIC news!!

In all, Comicon wasn't too important on the Harry Potter front this year. But the hiring of Dave McKean does tell us that the film will most definitely have wonderfully dark and scary creatures. Exciting news!!

The full article is at the link. Click Here to see some samples of Dave McKean's work.

The Dursley's House To Go On Bid Tomorrow

- [ Jasen @ 11:22 AM . PST . Movie ]

Tomorrow, Sandra Smith is auctioning off the three-bedroom, English residence that was used as Harry's home in the movies Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (search) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. (search)

And because of the notoriety the property has received, there's a minimum bid of $425,000 - more than $100,000 over its actual market value.

"It would be brilliant if somebody pays a million [pounds] for it!" Smith, an office secretary and mother of two, gushed to London's The Mail on Sunday.

 Harry Potter at Comic Con

- [ Scott @ 07:51 PM . PST . Movie ]

In a post on the Chris Rankin Online forums, webmistress Lynn described the 'footage' of PoA that was previewed.

"...including the PoA stuff. Which was utter crap. It was Dan Radcliffe and Alfonso Cuaron telling the audience everything we already knew about the films (and no, Quidditch was not cut...). AND NO FOOTAGE! Gr"

So those of you (myself included) who were worried that you'd miss something really cool, guess WB lived up to its' reputation of being stingy with details.

Editor's Note: Chris Rankin will also be making an appearance at the Basildon Sports Center. Thanks to CR.com!

 Worldwide Interest in 'Privet Drive'

- [ Scott @ 04:47 AM . PST . Movie ]

From ITV:

The Harry Potter magic could be working for the sellers of a house that became famous when it appeared in the films featuring the boy magician.

The house that played host to the loathsome Dursleys and their magical nephew in the Harry Potter movies is up for sale by auction and attracting potential buyer interest from around the world.

FPD Savills auctioneer, Chris Coleman Smith is surprised at just how widespread the interest in the property has been.

"We have had loads of interest. It's quite amazing, quite extraordinary. We have had all sorts, local interest, interest from London, other parts of the UK, plus, would you believe, I had a lady calling up from Moscow last week, said she'd heard about it and might be interested. So, who knows?"

The going rate for this house is £250,000. I wonder how much its will sell for given its association with Harry Potter. The auction commences July 22nd in London. The link above has the full article.

 Dementors, Werewolves, Dumbledore, Galore!

- [ Jasen @ 08:34 AM . PST . Movie ]

Moriarty from Aint-It-Cool-News has a report from a reader, who's apparently seen various scenes and other things from the sets of PoA.

Click the link below to read, but SPOILERS are ahead!

Okay, first of all, looks like those Dementors pictures last week were indeed superfake. TheOneRing.net ran a very effective proof of this that showed how they were doctored up. That’s good news, though. The e-mails I got from the effects guys working on the Dementors make it sound like they’re something very, very different. In the meantime, I had to edit up the opening paragraph of this e-mail to protect the identity of the source, but it sounds like a pretty solid, if brief, bit of info. Seems they showed some footage recently at a halfway party for the production, and as a result, we’ve got some new buzz for you...

hi harry

love the site,

The look is much much darker and creepier, the sets are the same but the lighting etc is much more shadowy

The scenes she saw were pam ferris being blown up, the initial train scenes with the dementors (who hadnt been put in yet), michael gambon as dumbledore (more commanding, threatening and moody), and a scene with dumbledore racing upstairs which she thought looked a bit odd as you wouldnt think he would be so nimble.

There was more but she hasnt read the books so she couldnt really say what they were.

Gary Oldman as Sirius is as described in book – really greasy long black hair and shabby clothes. The werewolf is enormous and the different heads for the transformation are quite horrific. She thinks that this might get a twelve rating over here. The animagus sirius is also huge and effective with someone inside controlling the animatronics

i know its all a bit sketchy but if theres anything else, il send you the gossip.

Quick reminder: Footage from the film will be shown at Comic-Con this Saturday!

 Harry Potter Filming Locations

- [ Scott @ 07:29 AM . PST . Movie ]

The Seattle Times has a fairly extensive article describing the locations of where some of the various scenes from the Harry Potter films have been shot.

LACOCK, England — Remember when Professor Dumbledore discovers Harry Potter sitting bemused before the magical Mirror of Erised in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," the first movie of the wildly popular book series?

That scene was filmed here in the Lacock Abbey cloisters. Two other rooms in the cloisters were used as movie classrooms, and a nearby house was seen as the site where Harry's parents were killed by Lord Voldemort.

Lacock is one of a number of Harry Potter filming locales in England and Scotland that have become tourist attractions since the release of the movies.

 Richard Harris Tells His Story

- [ Jasen @ 10:00 PM . PST . Movie ]

Richard Ouzounian of The Star, had an interview with the late Richard Harris last year, but as his editors told him then: "Play up the Harry Potter angle and forget about the rest". Here's what Harris said:

...Another thing Harris likes is the fact that this Lear has no Fool, but spends his time instead with his grandson, and Harris is well known for his devotion to his grandchildren.

In fact, were it not for one of them, he would not have agreed to take part in the Harry Potter films.

"Look, I had never even read the books," admits Harris. "All I knew was that they kept offering me the job and raising the salary every time they called me. And I turned them down for a very good reason."

"You see, anyone who signs up for the Potter films has to agree to be in the sequels, all of them! I didn't know if that's how I wanted to spend the last years of my life, and so I said no."

...Harris, suddenly tired, looked at me. "There, I gave you the stuff about Harry Potter. That's what the papers want. But try to use the rest of what I said as well.

"Because, you see, I don't just want to be remembered for being in those bloody films, and I'm afraid that's what going to happen to me."

Yes, I'd Like To Buy The Dursley's House!

For sale: a prim suburban house in middle England that boasts a boy wizard and an owl among its former residents.

Order of the Phoenix in 2007?

- [ Scott @ 08:09 PM . PST . Movie ]

Reader Jodie sent us this link from Yahoo! Movies:

Because of the lengths of the fourth and this fifth novel (nearly 900 pages!), there have been reports that each of these books may actually each be produced as two separate films at the same time (like Lord of the Rings and the Matrix sequels), and then released in the same year. With the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, scheduled for release in June, 2004, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire seems likely for 2005 or 2006, which suggests a 2006 or 2007 (or maybe even 2008) release for this movie(s).

A reminder that this is just speculation and conjecture, and nothing has been hinted at by Warner Brothers. For the full story, check out the link above.

Maggie Smith Talks About Her Career As An Actress

- [ Jasen @ 01:33 PM . PST . Movie ]

ThisisLondon has this:

It has taken more than 50 years of appearing on stage and in films for Maggie Smith to achieve the superstar status where children stop her in the street. "They mostly ask me to turn into a cat, which is very, very tricky because I can't do it," she says. "I wish I could."

Dame Maggie, 68, treats her Harry Potter bonanza with down-to-earth amusement, though the stern, shapeshifting Professor Minerva McGonagall is not her most challenging role.

"I look on the part as a sort of pension," she says. "In the one we're filming now (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) I'm not very involved. I'm always telling the children to go back to their dormitories. I trail around after Dumbledore and then tell them, 'Go back to your rooms immediately.'" She smiles slightly. "It's not a taxing role to learn, I have to say."

An intensely private person, Maggie Smith gives few interviews. We meet in a hotel room in New York where she is discussing an appearance on Broadway in David Hare's play The Breath of Life. She sits primly on a chair and talks in clipped sentences with an appealing disregard for her standing as one of the most revered actresses on earth.

"You just keep hoping something will turn up, and God willing, it does," she says. "I just dread the time, if it ever comes, that I have to stop. I don't want to, so hopefully I can go on and on and on."

 Kids Give Pay to School

- [ Scott @ 05:01 AM . PST . Movie ]

From the BBC:

Schoolchildren who worked as extras on the new Harry Potter film have been told they must forfeit their wages by their headmaster.

Donald Campbell has told pupils at Lochaber High School in Fort William, Inverness-shire, that the money they earned from The Prisoner of Azkaban will have to go into a school fund.

He said that because the work on the set in Glencoe was carried out during school hours, it counted as work experience and they could not receive payment for it.

 Branagh's New Role...

- [ M17 @ 07:26 PM . PST . Movie ]

Actor Kenneth Branagh, a.k.a. Gilderoy Lockhart, has some new roles:

Kenneth Branagh, who stole the second Harry Potter film as the vain Gilderoy Lockhart, is a busy man these days.

Not only is he about to open in the British National Theatre production of David Mamet's stage play, Edmond, but he's set to star alongside comic Eddie Izzard in a E25m children's film.

In Five Children and It, based on the classic by E. Nesbit, writer of The Railway Children and set for shooting in the Isle of Man in July, Branagh plays the uncle of a group of children staying in a strange seaside house where they dig up a 8,000-year-old sand fairy.
